Call for
Nominations: SPPQ Best Paper AwardÑ2006
State Politics and
Policy Quarterly and the State Politics and Policy organized section
of the American Political Science Association are proud to co-sponsor
the SPPQ Best Paper Award. We call for nominations
for this award of papers presented in 2006.
State Politics and Policy Quarterly and the State Politics and
Policy organized section will present the SPPQ Best Paper
Award to the best paper on the U.S. states presented at any political
science conference during the calendar year.
The goal of the SPPQ Best Paper Award is to
recognize and encourage high quality scholarship on U.S. state politics
and policy.
The author(s) of the winning paper will receive:
• A plaque commemorating the award,
• $250, and
• The opportunity to publish the paper (in revised version, as appropriate)
in State Politics and Policy Quarterly.
Eligibility: Any paper presented at a professional conference
during the calendar year that explores issues of U.S. state politics and
policy and/or uses data drawn largely from the U.S. states is eligible
for nomination.
Nominations: Nominations may be made to the editor of
State Politics and Policy Quarterly or to the award selection committee.
Nominations should include the name of the author(s), the title of the
paper, and the name of the conference at which the paper was presented.
If possible, nominations should include a copy of the original paper (preferably
in electronic form), as presented at the conference.
2006 selection committee: The 2006 SPPQ Best Paper Award
selection committee members are Michael Martinez, University of Florida
(chair); Michelle Barnello, Christopher Newport University; and Benjamin
Highton, University of California, Davis.

Criteria for selection: The winning paper will be the
one nominated that best tests general theories or models of political
behavior, political institutions, or policymaking with evidence from the
U.S. states, as determined by the selection committee. The selection committee
will look especially favorably on papers that demonstrate the imaginative
use of the methodological advantages of the U.S. states.
Schedule: Nominations (including a copy of the paper
as presented at the conference) must be received by JANUARY 1,
2007.
